Foreshadowing winter’s eminent arrival, the Goldenrod now appears to have a fresh coating of snowflakes. Left standing all winter in my garden for the birds’ enjoyment, the Goldenrod seeds are the soft fuzzy white variety. The birds use the sturdy plant to rest on while waiting their turn at the bird feeder. Some eat the seed along with the seeds of the
Coneflower and Aster. I have found that leaving these plants uncut provide a pleasing feature in the otherwise flat scene for me while also providing food and rest for nature’s visitors during our harsh Midwest winter.
