The prairie Grasses have dried and their golden golden hues wave in Chicago’s winds at Humboldt Park. Standing out among the grasses are the purple blooms of Asters, also native prairie plantings around Humboldt Park’s lake. These native plants are used for erosion control and also benefit wildlife and remind us that Illinois is, after all called the Prairie State. Some of the Milkweed’s pods have burst open, yet still cling to thier pod; soon each seed will gracefully float through the air with the aid of it’s feather-like tail. Chicago has more and more gardens hosting Milkweed plants to host the endangered Monarch butterflies while they summer in Chicago.
