Great, yet imperfect…

Chicago’s Lincoln Park hosts many statues. This one is of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, thought to be one of the greatest German literary persons. An excerpt from his Faust work is etched on a stone near the statue sharing a few of his thoughts: “To wisdom’s final fruit, profoundly true:
Of freedom and of life he only is deserving
Who every day must conquer them anew.
Thus here, by danger girt, the active day

Goethe was sympathetic to the American Revolution. He was an avid learner who easily memorized what he read and applied his learnings in his volumous writings as well as serving as diplomat and civil servant. Read more about this proliic and influential man. Copyright 2021 Pamela Breitberg
