This allowed us to watch the family diners celebrate this most special tradtion. When Macy’s took over the Marshall Fields’ loop store they were careful to keep functioning the Walnut Room and it’s Christmas tree traditons. A tradtition in Chicago’s loop as well as in any large city’s department stores in the U.S., is to view the windows around the outside of the store(s). In Chicago one must be bundled up with coat, scarf, mittens and hat in order to freeze less as you walk around all four walls of windows outside of a large store, usually a square block in size. Equally tradtional for the old Marshall Fields store, now Macy’s, is the collection of holiday trumpets. Historic tradition in the city of Chicago’s loop always has been the presence of the famous Clock at the corner of Macy’s (formerly Marshall Fields) and the Chicago Theater in the distance. Traditions seem more dear this special time of year; tradtions celebrated and enjoyed with loved ones is most cherished.
