Yellow giant…

Notice how the leaves tend to curl inwards just enough that they could hold water. This is the highrising Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum). It is among the tallest of the tall sunflowers to be found on the native prairies reaching up to ten feet tall. And, that means, as all prairie plants, that their roots may reach equally deep into the rich prairie soils. Such prairie natives just naturally control erosion and survive wildfireds. Cup Plants are host to numerous insects and birds. They feast on the pollen and drink waters from the leaf cups. Read more here. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
The diversity of a prairie can be mind boggling. This restored prairie setting at Lincoln Park’s South Pond shows a slice of prairie species. Notice the giant Cup Plant that shines above all the other tall blooms and grasses of the prairie. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
