Notice how the leaves tend to curl inwards just enough that they could hold water. This is the highrising Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum). It is among the tallest of the tall sunflowers to be found on the native prairies reaching up to ten feet tall. And, that means, as all prairie plants, that their roots may reach equally deep into the rich prairie soils. Such prairie natives just naturally control erosion and survive wildfireds.
