The Great Rhododendron, aka Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) is indeed a great native tree/shrub of the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. This evergreen has a proliferation of blooms 3/4 of the year, unlike the varieties I grew up with in the Midwest that were considered a springtime bloom. What a wonderful treat to see their showy flowers throughout the mountains.
