Exceptional diver…

Each of us has specialized bodies, evolved over millennium for survival. Using its feet for propulsion, Double-crested Cormorants (Nannopterum auritum) dive deep (up to twenty four feet) to catch fish. Though a water bird the Double-crested Cormorants’ feathers are not waterproof. After fishing they can be seen with wings spread, drying their feathers. The double crest above the eyes appears during mating season. Read more here. My introduction to the Cormorant was with a bronze statue my father bought in Japan. It now resides in my living room, and I never realized I’d see them in the Everglades wilds until years later.  Read about Cormorant Fishermen here; it’s a good read! Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
