Kleptomaniac spiders….

Spiders and their webs are easily camoflaged so that flying insects are easy prey when traveling through the webs’ spaces. Look closely, can you see the web? I usually find them when I catch the sun reflectng off parts of the silky web. Today I learned that Spiders exhibit kleptoparasitism. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
Kleptoparasitism is just what it sounds like; kleptomania of parasites. Who would steal parasites? Spiders and other insects. Here a Golden Silk Spider (Trichonephila clavipes) has spun one of its large webs; large enough to catch quite a few meals. Enough prey can be caught that other spiders and insects can steal some without danger to the host Golden Silk Spider’s health.
