Springtime snow…

This morning I share another bell-shaped, small, white springtime flower. This shrub, unlike the previous shrub, is not evergreen; its leaves turn scarlet red in the autumn. Japanese Snow Flower (Deutzia gracilis) is a member of the Hydrangea family, so I was unsurprised by the “snow” in its name. As I child, I considered Hydrangea to be nature’s floral snowballs. Japanese Snow Flowers are not balled clusters, however, but lush, dense blooms of springtime white. These were at the wondrous North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
Japanese Snow Flower is also known as Slender Deutzia. Slender Deutzia is so named after a Dutch botanist, Johan van der Deutz. And “gracillis” in Latin means slender or graceful. Unlike other Hydrangea varieties the clusters of blossoms are quite delicate though prolific on the plant. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
