Look into the sunlight and shadows with friends…

Today’s post shares my observations of the sun and shadow play in the shallow waters near shore. I also share my learning about the small fish that favors the shallow waters in Ft. Lauderdale during the warmer days of the year. Look at how easily these Pilchard camoflage with the dancing sunlight and shadows hitting the sands on the ocean floor. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
This image of a Pilchard shows their incredible camoflage ability. I saw the shadow first. Look carefully above the fish’s shadow, and into the shadow of the sand. There, you can see the Pilchard. I have heard that these small fish, used for bait, are Herring; but I’ve also heard they are Sardine. Turns out both names are correct. Read about these Sardine Herrings here. It is not unusual to see fishermen onshore fishing for these baitfish. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
My favorite thing to do during low tide is to stand in the shallow waters during the summer months and let the Pilchard tickle my feet. They seem to feel safe swimming between the legs and around me in circles. I have joked that if they flee quickly, it’s probably wise that I do as well! How wonderful to be allowed to be part of their habitat for a little while. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
