Morikami Garden is the site of what seems like a larger than life bonsai. This is a South Florida native, Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii). Smaller plants of this Slash Pine are used in potted bonsai arrangements. But this one stood out like a star along the lake. Slash refers to swampy areas that have become overgrown with trees and shrubs. My vocabulary increased this morning with this word. Either way it caught my attention. Read about this hardwood pine here. This pine would make an excellent choice for those with very large ornaments; there’s lots of space between needles and branches. Just let it grow in its habitat. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
