The red flowers in the Prairie here are Bee Balm (Monarda didyma), a prairie native. It is so named for its leaves’ antiseptic, calming effect. The jagged- looking clumps of tubular flowers make a calming tea. Copyright 2025 Pamela BreitbergThis Prairie is a newly created prairie, Lurie Garden, just north of the Art Institute of Chicago. It lives atop the Milleniumn Park underground garages. The Bee Balm, in the background, grows happily here among a diverse collection of prairie natives. Native plants, anywhere in the world, “play nicely” with others and share space with other species.
