A longer lens lends itself to capture only a small portion of a composition in sharp focus; the rest of the scene becomes blurry. Use a long lens to rid a busy composition of distractions from the main subject; the background to be just blurred colors. Copyright 2019 Pamela Breitberg

My Nikon 5500 has less megapixel capacity than my Panasonic Lumix; but it still yields beautiful images. Using a longer lens on the Nikon I am able to create portraits of flowers with a very limited field of focus. This is great for gardens when many leaves and other objects that vie for attention in my composition. It allows me to pick a main focal point that clearly becomes the star of the composition. Virginia Bluebells bloom in clusters and here the long lens is only able to focus clearly a couple of the blooms. This shallow depth of field creates a softer, gentler portrayal of a busy, crowded scene. Copyright 2019 Pamela Breitberg
