Similar but so different…

This lush ground cover is a welcome succulent in the subtropical environments. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), aka Water Hyssop, Herb of Grace and Indian Pennywort it is a native throughout much of the world’s subtropical wetlands. It is valued for its tolerance of brackish water. Having similar pretty white flower with thick yellow centers, is Shepherd’s Needles (Biden’s alba). This plant, however, is considered a weed and very much unloved by gardeners. The leaves distinguish it from Brahmi; it does not have the thick succulent leaves. The flowers are still pretty and I’ll enjoy them as I pass by their prescence since they’re not in my garden. One benefit of Shepherd’s Needles is that leaves are considered edible. Brahmi’s reputation for curing dementia among other things has been proven false. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
