The footprints have yet to be washed away by the high tide waves along the shore. They belong to a Semipalated Sandpiper ( Calidris pusilla) who hunts for breakfast. I am not usually on the beach in September, so seeing this beautiful creature is a rare treat for me. I see Sanderlings fairly regularly during beach walks; but Sandpipers are the slightly larger cousin. Copyright 2024 Pamela BreitbergSemipalmated means web footed for only part of their foot length. Such a scientific name in the “common name” for this Sandpiper. Copyright 2024 Pamela BreitbergI am always amazed that such small creatures can survive amidst the truly giant ocean waters and all the sea predators. I feel the same way about baby turtles as they seem to casually crawl out to the ocean as soon as they are hatched. I know that’s why mama turtles lay hundreds of eggs; chances of survival are slim. But I also realize as I look at the ocean vastness from shore that I, too, am just a wee speck in the big picture of life. Feeling grateful for being. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
