Liquor was the drink of too many according to the late 19th century, Woman’s Christian Temperance Union members. They motivated hundreds of thousands of children around the world to pledge abstinence and design clean drinking water fountains. The Fountain Girl was the winning design. Read about it’s rich and tangled history here. Of course unsaid was that liquor was often the drink of choice because it’s very nature killed bacterias that literally plaqued many countries coming from local water sources. It’s higher platform emphasizes it’s importance; but the water might only be enjoyed today by birds and canines. There are many other water drinking fountains throughout the park for one’s hydration needs. Copyright 2022 Pamela Breitberg
