Around the pond

The textured clouds compliment the textures of the prairie along the eastern edge of Lincoln Park’s South Pond. The scene contrasts sharply with Chicago’s downtown in the background of this scene. Copyright 2022 Pamela Breitberg
Thistle is a non-native that easily sneaks into garden and prairie meadows. There is only one species of Thistle that is native and identifiable from its smooth, non-scratchy leaves; this one is just a “weed” though it does add some welcome color. Copyright 2022 Pamela Breitberg
Purple Coneflower is a favorite prairie native. Here they thrive in the restored prairie lands next to the Education Pavillion just east of South Pond. Who would think such a vista is only several miles away from the busy, peopled downtown Chicago! The frequent green spaces is one thing that makes living in Chicago most enjoyable. Another prairie treasure is the Leadplant (amorpha canescens), aka downy indogo bush, prairie shoestring or buffalo bellows. Read about this interesting plant here. Copyright 2022 Pamela Breitberg
Another species, Honey Locust, whose leaves are born reddish and fade to green as they mature. Copyright 2022 Pamela Breitberg
