Looking upward in order to brushing against some low hanging branches recently stopped me in my tracks. The leaves were literally loaded throughout the entire tree with round galls. Turns out that I was quickly able to find online that the tree is a Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), a native of North American. Hackberry’s often are host to Hackberry Nipple Gall Makers. I have not yet spotted the teeny cicada-like adults; only holes in the leaves from their dining. Read about them here. Copyright 2022 Pamela Breitberg
