Hibernating in Florida…

South Florida is not immune to trees that do dormant in the winter months. I first thought this huge tree had reached the end of it’s life. But last month beautiful pink flowers began blooming followed by the gradual emergence of green leaves. It was just sleeping; even in Florida’s warm yearround climate. Meet the gorgeous flowers of the Red-Jasmine (Plumeria rubra) thriving just outside the gift shop (previously maid’s quarters) of the Bonnet House. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
Beautiful pink clusters of Plumeria flowers grace the top branches. Most species of Plumeria are shrublike in size; this one is a giant among them. Native of Mexico and Central America, the Bartletts filled their gardens with warm weather plants from around the world. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
The delicate blooms are easily removed with southern winds and rain. It is fun to pick up the fallen blooms and wear them in your hair. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
