Which one of two…

This is a case where I should have taken an image of the tree’s trunk, for identification purposes. This is an Ironwood tree which could be either of two Birch varieties: The American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana or the American Hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). Both are native species and welcome in the garden and along sidewalks. The difference is in their trunk. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
Both species go by the nickname of Ironwood. Both have similar seed pods which seem to have been organized by someone who needs things neatly in line and seem carefully enveloped by a leaf. Amazing nature once again at work.  Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg

Mystery solved on this morning’s walk. It’s an American Hophornbeam. Read here. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
