I “assumed” that this was a juvenile Green Heron, but learned that Lincoln Park hosts yet another Heron type. Here is a young Yellow-crowned Heron (Nyctanassa violacea). This blog and the learning that goes into verifying my posts is rewarding for me as I continue my learning and being awed by natured diversity. It was resting at a small waterfall across from Lincoln Park’s South Pond. I do not believe it would have found any fish in this small water area. It would have had better luck hunting the large water ways just behind it; but they are known to home in areas that sometimes have dried up water holes. Yellow-crowned Night Heron’s diet is crustaceans instead of fish like other Herons. Perhaps it was looking for a place to nap; Yellow-crowned Night Heron’s feed during the day or night.
