A bush that’s a nanny…

Meet the Nannybush,, the future Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago). It is a Chicago native plant, smelling sweet for the couple weeks that it flowers each springtime. Notice the extended stamens making the flowers seem frilly. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
The Nannybush can be quite large and tree-like. I noticed it on my walk around a Lincoln Park migratory bird sanctuary. Later in the year it produces bright red berries. It’s name comes from the tendency for Nanny Goats to feed on the berries! I don’t think I’ll see any Nanny Goats in Chicago’s Lincoln Park! Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
