Natural pagoda…

Looking down on a Pagoda Dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) shows the flat-topped dome of this tree. Native to eastern U.S.; this one was the North Carolina Arboretum. The flowers have changed to seedheads. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
It is not often I can look down on small tree such as this Pagoda Dogwood. The hills in the Great Smoky Mountains allows such views. Other names for this are Alternate-Leaved Dogwood and Green Osier. Osier references a specific soil type that is “deep, poorly drained and rapidly permeable” found along coastal areas of the Eastern U.S. (soilseries,sc.gov.usda.gov). Though the Smokies are not near the coast the highs and lows of this Mountainous area allow for such habitats. Learn more here. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
