A lone Sanderling (Calidris alba) hunted along the shoreline this morning looking for crabs or invertebrates. Copyright 2024 Pamela BreitbergNot afraid of the incoming waves, the Sanderling patiently waits for its ebbing so it can find crab or other invertebrates that have just buried themselves in the sand. The “alba” in its name is due to it’s winter white coat. Copyright 2024 Pamela BreitbergSanderlings are easy to miss when walking on the beach. Their colors blend in with the shoreline. Sometimes, the only way I spy them prior to almost walking on top of them is from their rapid movement to and from the waves’ edges. Beautiful, amazing, resiliant. This one may have traveled 3000 miles to be a “snow bird” here (aka northerner that winters in Florida). I am awed. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
