Red bracts…

This plant flourishes on the Atlantic coast of South Florida, while it’s a Pacific Island native. Warm temps and humidity is required for Red Ginger (Alpinia purpurata) to grow outdoors. Ostrich Plume is another common name for this Ginger. The plume of red is actually leaf-like bracts instead of the flowers for this plant. Often bracts attract more attention than a plant’s flowers.  Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
