Just wow…

I am sure I’ve never seen this plant before this year. This is another type of Milkweed: a Giant Milkweed (Calotropis gigantea) from Asia and Africa. I know Butterfly Milkweed and Prairie Milkweed, both native to the U.S. But this variety is amazingly original in design. Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
Now that I know it’s name as Giant Milkweed I see the remblance to other Milkweed varieties. The leaves and buds are similar. but the open flower is quite different. Yes, this Milkweed is host to Monarchs’ eggs as they migrate. This southern variety is evergreen. Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
The alternate common name for this beauty is Crown Plant. I do see that reference as I look at the overall cluster of blooms. A fitting location for Monarch butterfly larvae. Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
