A native with false in its name…

Once again, a beautiful, native species has included in its common name, “false”. False Solomon’s Seal (Maianthemum racemosum) is a prairie native. The leaves resemble Solomon’s Seal; hence, the pioneers decided it should be called False Solomon’s Seal.  “Racemosum” means that the flowers bloom first on the buds near the short stems while newer flowers form upwards on the shoots.
