Greening dunes…

Up and down the continuous beach in Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida are Dunes with seawater tolerant plantlife. Many volunteers planted these dunes over the past six years and they are rapidly maturing. The Dunes‘ purpose? To help control beach erosion which includes sand coming inland during Hurricane and Tropical Storm seasons. The great news is that it’s working! Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
The plants on the Dunes include a variety, including young Palm, Seagrape and grasses. Often wildlife is spotted enjoying the new green area too. Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
One of the interesting outcomes of the Dune plantings is that hills of Dunes are beginning to form. The wind blown sands are caught and held by the plants slowly creating the hilly terrain one thinks of for Dunes. It’s all good; using nature to do their thing is great!
