Baited hunting…

In the right lighting the subtle green black tint to the top of the head and back identify this Green Heron (Butorides visrecens). Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
A small white streak down its chest also help verify this bird as a Green Heron. This is a small Heron who feeds on small fish and aquatic wildlife. It lives near ponds, wetlands and lakes. As it wades in shallow waters it is a rare bird that uses bait to entice its prey. The Green Heron uses anything from a small fish to a feather as dangling bait! Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
In the shade it camouflages in the shallow waters. Unlike the Common Gallinule it doesn’t have wide feet allowing it to rest on top of plants. Females, as most female birds wear less colorful attire. Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
