More complicated than we realize…

Green Cay Nature Center hosts more than birds and other aquatic life. In addition to the nest on top of this tree is someone else worth knowing. Once again, my long lens proved worthy.  Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
Easily camoflauging, unless mating season when they show their colors, the Green Iguana here suns high up a in treetop. These invasive, non-native,  species to Florida are considered nuisances. However, in reality, it should not be forgotten what amazing creations of nature they truly are. Green Iguana have dinosaur like appearance with a variety of scales over different parts of their bodies. Eash scale type has different purposes resulting in different thickness, size and shape and colors. The “bubble” by it’s head is called a Subtympanic Shield whose purpose is to protect its eardrum! That’s clever. Read more about these critters here. Copyright 2026 Pamela Breitberg
