Seasonal traveler…

Green Heron

Careful observation at Lincoln Park’s North Pond can reveal unique birds. This Green Heron (Butorides virenscens) probably wintered in the southern States or Central America. In the South they frequent coastal areas or Mangrove swamps. In the Midwest they are content to residency by ponds and wetlands. Copyright 2018 Pamela Breitberg

City view…

Yes, that is a passing bird captured as I focused on the camper along the Lake Michigan shoreline just north of downtown. I don’t think it’s legal, but it seemed to work. Copyright 2018 Pamela Breitberg

When the dogs bark…

Oh, the stories that can be told…

Something different for today; I don’t usually steer my attention away from “nature”. But I find this image rich with story possibilities. From the couple in the foreground to the couple in the background (yes, there are two there), to the graffiti. What story comes to mind? I’d love to hear from you. These un-posed, random moments are incredible when so wonderfully self-composed.

Petite bouquets…

Eastern Daisy Fleabane (Erigeron annuus) shows up voluntarily along paths and roadsides. The flowers are thumbnail sized and bloom in bouquet arrangements tempting passersby to capture their loveliness. Today I brought them home as images saved.

Peak into azure joy…

Springtime Spiderwort beginning to bloom. Copyright 2017 Pamela Breitberg

Earlier in the month Spiderworts (Tradescantia) were in bloom. They are perennials that tolerate both mesic and “wet feet” (to be in damp soil), so it was appropriate for them to be found near Lake Michigan’s shoreline. The leaves can be 12 inches or longer which, in this case, gently hide its opening buds. What a pleasant find during my morning adventure on the pebbly path.

Cheer for Cherry blossoms…

Walking along Lake Michigan’s shores in Chicago Lincoln Park I was graced with the springtime explosion of these bright cheery blossoms. “Hope springs eternal”; but here spring brings forth eternal hope.

Winter along Lake Michigan is only for the hardiest. It did surprise me to come across a bicyclist on the path along the Lake’s shoreline. A young family chose throwing snowballs into the lake instead of the traditional pebbles.

Something I would never have done young. I'll stick to building snowmen. Wow! Copyright 2016 Pamela Breitberg

Shades of an aster…

Along the lake’s edge, close to where the Frost Asters were abundant, was one cluster of Asters with pale violet hues. They appeared to be a soft purple until looked close and the striped pattern was revealed. I’m unsure of the species and wonder if it might be a hybrid Aster.
