Layers and shades of a flower…

Like an onion, Chrysanthemum flowers have many layers. Mum layers are lush petals. These Mums were cut flowers earlier this fall; I knew these less expensive cut flowers would last 10 days or more. The petals of Chrysanthemums are spoon-like as they turn slightly inward. Chicago nurseries sell “hardy” mums but they are rarely hardy enough to be truly perennial enabling them to survive Chicago harsh winters and return the following autumn.
