Web making flower…

I tried for years to grow this unique perennial in the corner of my garden. My choice location for planting Spiderwort was at my yard’s edge across from a forest preserve that received almost full sunlight; perfect for a perennial that grows at the edge of woodland areas or in open fields. But my Spiderwort (Tradescantia) never thrived. Probably because the garbage truck would routinely go up into my yard to make the turn around the corner. Ugh. This summer, it seems Spiderwort has become a new garden favorite. I see it regularly on my morning walks through Chicago. Its name derives from the sticky sap that appears when cut; it dries to a silklike substance. Purple Heart is perhaps the prettier nickname for this deep purple flower; maybe why it’s become more popular in the home garden. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
