Yet another sunflower, native to the North American prairies: Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) or Yellow Ironweed. It is so named for the way the leaves are attached to the stems giving the appearance of “wings”. Read more here. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
Wingstems grow up to eight feet tall as many other yellow “sunny tributes” on the prairie. Sometimes called Yellow Ironweed is due to its nature of sometimes only producing disk flowers, without the long petals. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
I am always amazed at the endless variety of yellow flowers native to the Midwest. It has been said that our natives prairies are as vast in fauna and flora as the rainforest; and therefore prairies are treasures to perserve. I have to agree! Coopyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
