Ah, another plant with the first name of “common”; that nomenclature seems unfairly petty to me. Common Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennnis) is another yellow native prairie specie but often is overshadowed by the more typical yellow sunflower varieties. Read about it here. Copyright 2023 Pamela BreitbergGrowing, as most of native nature does, among cracks in the walkway, was this little beauty. Less common than other prairie natives, this native is Narrow-Leaved Vervain (Verbena simplex). It was the only such plant I saw that morning, but it did catch my atttention. This variety is not to be confused with its strongly invasive cousin, Blue Vervain, which is illegal to buy in Illinois. Copyright 2023 Pamela Breitberg
