Peaking out of the prairie grasses surrounding South Pond, is the Butterfly Weed. My question today is how do “native”, “essential” plants get the name “WEED”? Both Butterfly Weed, pictured here, and Milkweed are native prairie plants in the U.S. Yet they have the nuisance title of “weed” in their name. I can only assume the names were given by those persons new to a land who did not appreciate their importance and beauty. They will always be treasured by naturalists, butterfly lovers and prairie natives. Copyright 2024 Pamela Breitberg
