Budding portrait…

Two things drew me to painting this Bearded Iris Bud portrait. The strong lighting on this individual stem and bud contrasted with the other Irises, separating it and highlighting it. Also, the insect (I’m thinking a wasp?) mimicked the “bearded”, still closed, part of the Bearded Iris flower. The trick for me was to provide detail in the bud while still keeping the piece “painterly”. I already had an awesome photograph, so the painting needed to be special in itself. The acrylic painting was one of my larger ones, 16″x20″ so that I could better paint details of the Iris as well as the insect. See how the colors and patterning of the insect seem to mimic the Bearded part of the Iris bud. Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
