Pye not Pie…

Next to the native Asters inside the Caldwell Lily Pond is another native: Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium). Joe Pyeweed was, yes, named after a Mohican chief Schauquethqueat who took the Christian name of Joe Pyeweed in the mid 1700s. Read here about the many uses of this native. Joe Pye Weed is one of the tallest native woodland plants. It prefers partly shaded areas so it can also be found on the prairie. It is often used in native gardens for it’s height and show. The seed head clusters are hard to miss. Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
The leaves are whorled around the stem, and seedheads (and flower clusters) are quite large. Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg
There are quite a few plantings of these natives inside the Caldwell Lily Pond preserve. Because of their height and large clusters of seedheads, they are easy to find.  Copyright 2025 Pamela Breitberg

Autumn brings seedheads
