Another image from the North Park Village Nature Center. Have you ever seen a Cattail explode….. an amazing trick of nature in order to spread seeds.  It is like a bomb waiting to detonate; only needing a touch at the right time to set if off.

It took close observation to find because of the dense foliage. Cattail “sprout hundreds of thousands of stems, all from a start as a single seed! (Illinois Department of Natural Resources)” The Cattail is oft considered a nuisance and control measures take place many times to keep it in line and share the water with other species and animals.
