Lurie Garden hosts many native prairie species with sprinkles of non-natives. All make for a beautiful prairie atmosphere in the heart of the big city. Here a European native, Keeled Garlic (Allium carinatum) gracefully blooms. Copyright 2025 Pamela BreitbergBy comparison, this is Meadow Garlic (Allium canadense), a native of the U.S. prairies. The clusters of blooms are compact balls. Both are members of the Allium, or onion family. Chicago means “onion”, so most appropriate to include some Allium in the prairie gardens of Chicago.
